In the summer of 2009 I got in contact
with Alan Mintz, the band's attorney. He was the guy that shopped
Nirvana their record deal and represented them for several years.
So I asked him about how many copies there were made and how many
"variations" there is of this tape since my tape is a bit different
from the copy found on
www.sliver.it
My copy has this printed on the front:
Nirvana
Demo
The copy found on
www.sliver.it
has this:
Nirvana - Demo
But anyway, this was his reply to my questions:
"
Based on your picture, that tape was
made by Bret Hartman who was an A&R guy at MCA Records at the time.
He was the first major label exec to make them an offer. The tapes I
sent out to get them their record deal did not have his or John Silva's
name on them. That is the full repertoire of the demos we had at the
time. I suspect that he probably made 20-30 of those. I made about 15
myself I would think, but as I said mine would have only had my name as
contact, and were made in my office, not at the duplication company
listed on your tape. Many of the original tapes I sent out when
shopping their deal would have had only 3 or 4 songs.
I have at my home, the original tape from which all those were made,
which contains the repertoire on your tape, and the titles of which
were handwritten by Kurt. I've always suspected that it was quite
valuable.
Best,
Alan"
